Details

My name is Matthis Debruyne, and I am an 20-year-old passionate photographer. My journey into the world of photography began at the age of 13, and ever since, I have been captivated by the art of capturing moments through my lens. I am fortunate to reside near the breathtaking Lake Constance in the beautiful German state of Bavaria, providing me with a rich tapestry of landscapes and subjects to explore.

While my father played a significant role in shaping my understanding of photography, I have also dedicated countless hours to self-learning and experimentation, constantly seeking to refine my craft. Through this process, I have developed expertise in various genres, including Fine Art, Landscape, Portrait, Black and White, and Astrophotography. Each category presents its own unique challenges and opportunities for creative expression, and I find joy in exploring them all.

When I'm not behind the camera, I indulge in a few other hobbies that bring balance to my life. One of my favorite pastimes is swimming, and I actively participate in the local swimming club. Additionally, I enjoy embarking on adventurous bike rides with my friends, exploring the hidden trails of the backcountry. And, of course, what better way to unwind with friends than to gather around a crackling fire, sharing laughter and good food at a cozy evening barbecue.

Photography has become a defining part of my life, allowing me to express my creativity, document the beauty around me, and preserve precious memories. Through continuous learning, exploration, and the pursuit of new challenges, I aspire to evolve as a photographer and create images that evoke emotions and inspire others to see the world through a different lens.

Motivation

Photography, for me, is more than just a hobby—it is a profound form of self-expression and a means of connecting with the world around me. There are several motivating factors that drive my passion for photography, fueling my desire to capture compelling images and tell visual stories. Moreover, photography serves as a powerful medium for storytelling. With each click of the shutter, I have the opportunity to convey narratives, evoke emotions, and spark a connection between the viewer and the image. I believe that every photograph has a story to tell, whether it's a single frame or a series of images, and I am driven to capture images that resonate with people, stir their imaginations, and provoke contemplation. But also photography allows me to freeze fleeting moments in time and preserve them forever. Life is filled with transient experiences and emotions that can quickly fade from memory, but through photography, I can capture these ephemeral instances and create lasting mementos. Whether it's a radiant sunset casting vibrant hues across the sky or a candid portrait capturing the raw emotions of a loved one, photography immortalizes these cherished moments and allows me to relive them again and again.

Different typs of photography

What types of photography do I enjoy? While I’ve spent time capturing landscapes, especially the tranquil beauty of the lake and its surroundings, my passion has recently shifted toward street photography.

Street photography fascinates me because it’s about capturing the raw, unfiltered essence of everyday life. The hustle and bustle of the city, the interplay of light and shadow on urban architecture, and the fleeting, candid moments that tell unique stories—these are what inspire me. It’s an art form that challenges me to see the extraordinary in the ordinary and document the world as it unfolds in real time.

Portrait photography also plays a significant role in my work. It allows me to connect with people and represent them in meaningful ways, often blending elements of street photography to create dynamic, storytelling portraits. Together, these genres push my creativity and help me share authentic perspectives of the world around us.

Gear

As a photographer, my gear is an extension of my creativity. Each piece serves a specific purpose, allowing me to adapt to different styles and scenarios. Here’s a look at what’s in my kit:

Street Photography and Everyday Carry

For street photography, portability and simplicity are key. My Canon EOS R is at the heart of it all, offering excellent image quality and versatility in a compact package. Paired with this are three manual-focus lenses from Olympus Zuiko, which bring a unique, vintage character to my images:

  • 28mm f/2.8: A great lens for capturing intimate, dynamic street scenes with a natural perspective.

  • 35mm f/2: My go-to for versatility, perfect for framing tighter compositions or focusing on a specific subject.

  • 50mm f/1.4: When I want to isolate a subject and create beautiful, creamy bokeh, this lens shines.

These lightweight lenses make everyday carry a breeze, and their manual focus helps me slow down and be intentional with my shots—perfect for the spontaneous nature of street photography.

Landscape and Fine Art Black-and-White Photography

For landscape and fine art photography, precision and control are essential. My Canon EOS R pairs seamlessly with lenses that deliver outstanding sharpness and detail:

  • Canon 28-70mm f/2.8 L USM: A versatile zoom lens with a wide aperture, ideal for capturing everything from dramatic vistas to fine art compositions.

  • Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM: Perfect for isolating details in the landscape or compressing perspective to create striking compositions.

To ensure my shots are razor-sharp, I rely on the Rollei Rock Solid Beta Mark II Tripod. It provides the stability I need for long exposures and precise framing, especially when paired with my collection of ND filters. These filters allow me to control light and create dreamy, minimalist black-and-white images with silky-smooth water or dramatic skies.

Each piece of gear in my bag serves a purpose, whether I’m chasing fleeting moments on the streets or crafting timeless fine art compositions in nature. Together, they help me bring my creative vision to life. And remember gear doesn`t matter.
